43% of the energy consumed in our country is used to run our
buildings. Most of this energy comes from the burning of fossil
fuels. The burning of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases that are
changing our climate. We must find a way to dramatically reduce the
amount of energy our buildings consume. How can we design and construct our buildings to meet this challenge?
One way is through the Passive House Standard. Passive House is one
of the world’s most rigorous building energy performance standards,
requiring a dramatic reduction in energy consumption while yielding
other benefits such as superior comfort, durability and health. This webinar focuses the design and construction of a Passive House in
northern Vermont. This house was the first Certified Passive House in
the U.S. for Habitat for Humanity, the first Passive House in Vermont
and the first to be built modular. The webinar will discuss the principles of Passive House design:
Envelope specifications; insulation, air sealing, and thermal bridge
free details; mechanical systems; and modeling in the PHPP. The
webinar will then walk you through the construction of the Passive
House. The webinar will also review the monitored data on energy
consumption, temperature and indoor air quality. Lastly we will
review lessons learned and think about what is to come. ---Greg

High Performance Buildings and Passive House, Wed 06.06.2012
Wed 06.06.2012
AIA CES: 7.5 LUs | 7.5 HSW | 7.5 SDWhen: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6
Where: At The Center
Spend the day with Dr. Straube learning about high performance buildings and Passive House.
PH and high performance net zero capable buildings share many of the same goals and use common strategies. However, there are differences some significant. This seminar will compare and contrast high performance net zero energy building design to the PH approach by looking at specific building types, occupancy, and components. In the process, you will learn the fundamentals of high performance design and gain an understanding of the tradeoffs and practicalities that can be encountered.
As he always does, John will provide thought provoking examples and analysis to shed light on what is truly important in a high performance building design.
Speaker Bio
John Straube is a principal of Building Science Corporation and a professor of building science in the Civil Engineering Department and School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Dr. Straube has acted as an educator, researcher, consultant and expert witness on energy efficiency, durability and IAQ. Current interests include the optimal system design of buildings, sustainable buildings, and moisture problem avoidance.

INVITATION - Certified Passive House Tradesperson Training - A First for New York
Certified Passive House Tradesperson Training in New York City
21 - 25 May 2012
The world renowned Passive House Academy (PHA) in collaboration with the Association for Energy Affordability (AEA) is delighted to announce details of it’s first Certified Passive House Tradesperson Training course starting 21 May, in New York.
The five day course aimed at building contractors and professionals is accredited by the Passive House Institute and takes place at the Association for Energy Affordability, 1695 Boone Avenue, Bronx, NY 10460. Over the five days participants will be offered a unique and invaluable insight and experience into the fundamentals and techniques in building Passive Houses. Today, the passive house standard is recognized globally as the leading benchmark for building energy performance and is fast becoming the preferred choice in providing high quality, high efficiency, dynamic and cost effective solutions for US home owners and businesses.
The training course is delivered by internationally acclaimed and experienced trainers from the Passive House Academy who developed the world’s first internationally accredited Passive House Tradesperson course. The five day course focuses on the building envelope and combines classroom lectures with practical hands-on training. Participants will also have the opportunity to sit and pass an exam that ultimately provides participants with world wide recognition as Certified Passive House Tradesperson.
Learning Objectives:
- Definition of Passive House and basic principles of designing a Passive House.
- Understand the importance of thermal bridging and airtightness.
- Locate the correct positioning of the airtightness layer in relation to the insulation, and structural layers in a range of typical construction types.
- Demonstrate correct installation of insulation materials, and air tightness membranes.
- Outline the steps and procedures involved in the performance of an airtightness test using the Passive House methodology, and blower door technology.
- Identify suitable Passive House glazing, and frame types.
- Practice optimal fitting techniques, and calculate associated thermal bridge values.
- Identify and accurately interpret data from the PHPP files to determine construction details.
Certification:
On successfully passing the exam, participants will receive international accreditation from the Passivhaus Institut as Certified Passive House Tradesperson.
Classroom Sessions:
May 21 – May 24th each day starts at 9am and ends at 6pm. On the last day we will start at 9am and end at 12pm (midday).
Course Costs – the costs for the training course is $1350 and the exam is an additional $350
