"Measuring"- Everything You Need to Know to Get to the Truth About Building Energy Performance

AIA CES: 1.5 LUs

1.5 HSW
1.5 SD

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23
Where: At The AIANY Center
Presented by Henry Gifford of Chris Benedict, R. A.

Mr. Gifford has been in the energy saving business since 1982 and has measured, diagnosed and improved building energy use since then. In this presentation, Henry will discuss the basics of energy flows in a building, which flows are important to measure and how to measure them. He will tie together how energy flows are related to occupant comfort, building durability and energy efficient performance.

The discussion will cover the basics of energy – clearing up confusion over rates vs. quantities, how energy enters and leaves a building and which energy flows can be measured, what can be learned from measurements, which measurements are best ignored, what instruments to use, what they cost, and how to use them. The discussion will enable you to make your own informed decisions. Henry will conclude by disclosing some interesting and surprising things that actual measurements have uncovered.

Please bring your questions as they stimulate the conversation and guide the presenter on the direction that the audience wants to go.

Speaker Bio:

Henry Gifford is truly a one and only product of NYC and it’s large and eclectic collection of buildings, their mechanical systems and the myriad of problems found with them. Henry grew up solving energy related problems with buildings. As a long time building owner, mechanical contractor and expert designer, he understands the different perspectives of a good energy efficient solution. His experience was gained, or I should say, earned, the hard way with direct hands on experience making real systems work to produce real measurable energy savings for the same or similar installed cost as conventional systems. Henry has a deep understanding of and respect for the physics and science behind building systems. This strong foundational knowledge, in combination with his practical experience, enables him to create systems that measurably save energy and money. Henry also has a gift for explaining things in a simple down to earth and intuitive manner that all will appreciate. Henry currently is a master designer of mechanical systems and partner at the renowned energy efficient architecture firm, Chris Benedict, RA.
